A South Dakota man is accused of raping and murdering a 6-month-old baby girl.

The infant was injured in the morning hours of June 26 and was taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital for treatment, authorities said.

Around 12:15 p.m., the Rapid City Police Department was notified that the baby had passed away, according to a news release.

Preliminary results of an autopsy indicate the infant died from a brain bleed sustained as the result of blunt force trauma, officials said.

Investigators identified 26-year-old Kristopher Houchin as a suspect in the girl’s death and arrested him on charges of first-degree rape, child abuse and second-degree murder, according to the news release.

Houchin remains in custody on $5 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 15.

A call for comment to Houchin’s attorney was not immediately returned.

An investigation into the baby’s death is ongoing.
